More about the procedure

Procedure characteristics

What is pelvic floor muscle electromagnetotherapy actually?

EMSELLA uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic field (HIFEM) technology to stimulate deep pelvic floor muscles and restore neuromuscular control.

It is designed for non-invasive treatment:

  • Strengthening pelvic floor muscles
  • Shaping gluteal muscles / strengthening weak buttocks
  • Treatment of urinary incontinence after childbirth, stroke and other neurological diseases
  • Treatment of fecal incontinence

The key to effectiveness is the focus of electromagnetic energy, penetration depth and stimulation of the entire pelvic floor. During a single EMSELLA therapy, thousands of supramaximal contractions of pelvic floor muscles occur, including urethral and anal sphincters, which is extremely important in muscle re-education of incontinent patients with urinary and fecal incontinence.

During treatment, you will feel pelvic floor muscle contractions, which leads to their strengthening and improved effectiveness in controlling urinary and fecal incontinence. After EMSELLA therapy, there is an increase in strength and coordination of pelvic floor muscles.

This effect is also used in the treatment of hyperactive (irritable bladder), chronic pelvic pain with pelvic floor muscle hypotonia and pelvic floor muscle discoordination after cerebrovascular accidents or other neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis and post-spinal cord injury conditions.

How quickly do results appear?

Improvement can be observed even after one treatment. Results typically improve over 4-6 weeks. The standard course includes 6 sessions, which should be scheduled 1 to 2 times per week.

What problems does pelvic floor muscle electromagnetotherapy solve?

The procedure solves urinary incontinence, urinary incontinence after stroke, hyperactive bladder, irritable bladder, weak pelvic floor, weak gluteal muscles, urination problems with multiple sclerosis, urination problems with myasthenia gravis, fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, and chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

What are the advantages of pelvic floor muscle electromagnetotherapy?

EMSELLA electromagnetotherapy brings clients several advantages immediately:

  • It is non-invasive and painless – the procedure is performed in clothing without incisions, anesthesia and recovery
  • Effective pelvic floor strengthening – hundreds of thousands of contractions during one therapy significantly strengthen muscles that are difficult to activate voluntarily
  • Solves real problems – suitable for urinary incontinence, hyperactive bladder, frequent urination, pelvic pain, fecal incontinence and muscle dysfunction after various diseases
  • Brings fast results – improvement in muscle control abilities can be observed after the first therapy; best results are achieved between 4-6 weeks

What are the risks of pelvic floor muscle electromagnetotherapy?

The EMSELLA method is very safe, but it can cause:

  1. Mild transient muscle fatigue or tingling sensations, similar to post-exercise feeling – common and short-term
  2. Negative reaction to electromagnetic fields – contraindicated for persons with pacemaker or other metal/electrical implants
  3. Transmission of unexplained skin reactions is exceptional, as the procedure is superficial and usually well tolerated

How does pelvic floor muscle electromagnetotherapy work?

  1. After consultation, no prior preparation or undressing is required.
  2. The procedure is performed comfortably seated on the EMSELLA device. Simply sit down and the procedure starts.
  3. During the 30-minute treatment, thousands of supramaximal contractions of deep pelvic floor muscles are induced, including urethral and anal sphincters.
  4. After the procedure, there are no restrictions – you can return to your normal routine without delay.

Who at Lauros clinic performs pelvic floor muscle electromagnetotherapy?

The procedure is performed by MUDr. Milan Gajdoš, MPH, who has performed more than 7000 urological and sexological procedures. The doctor performs the procedure in Bratislava or Piešťany.

How much does pelvic floor muscle electromagnetotherapy cost?

The price for pelvic floor muscle electromagnetotherapy procedure is 330 Eur.

This price is for one session, in case of interest in a more significant and long-term effect, it is recommended to complete a standard course consisting of 6 sessions, which are performed 1-2 times per week.

Who is pelvic floor muscle electromagnetic therapy intended for?

The procedure is suitable for men and women with urinary incontinence, men and women with chronic pelvic pain syndrome, men and women with fecal incontinence, men and women with pelvic floor muscle weakness, as well as for men and women with an overactive bladder.

Who is pelvic floor muscle electromagnetic therapy not intended for?

The procedure is not suitable for patients with a pacemaker or any type of electrical stimulator.

What is the process before pelvic floor muscle electromagnetic therapy?

No special preparation is required before the procedure. It is advisable to schedule it outside of the menstrual period. The procedure is performed in regular clothing and does not require undressing.

What happens after pelvic floor muscle electromagnetic therapy?

There are no restrictions after the procedure. You may experience “muscle soreness” in the pelvic floor muscles, similar to after exercise. There is an improvement in control over the bladder, urethral sphincter, or anal sphincter.

The gluteal muscles (buttocks) are strengthened, leading to a positive aesthetic effect on their shape. Symptoms of an overactive bladder decrease — excessive urge to urinate and frequent urination are reduced.
