What exactly is Peyronie’s disease treatment?

Penile hardening and curvature, or Induratio penis plastica or Peyronie’s disease, is a localized penile condition in which an inflammatory focus develops in the tunica albuginea of the corpora cavernosa. In the early stages of the disease, it is accompanied by penile pain at the site of the developing plaque.

The plaque (localized inflammatory focus) gradually hardens and calcifications are deposited in it. This condition, if left untreated, can lead to penile curvature or other deformities, erectile dysfunction, and often the inability to have sexual intercourse.

It is important to know that the earlier treatment begins, the more successful it is. The disease can usually be stopped and thus prevent penile deformity and pain. If you experience penile pain or palpable hardening, do not hesitate and schedule an examination as soon as possible to prevent penile deformities, pain, and impotence. Advanced forms with significant penile deformities require surgical treatment. However, surgical treatment is burdened with a high risk of subsequent impotence (loss of erection) due to possible damage to penile nerves and blood vessels.

Our clinic uses a combination of methods in treatment – focused shockwave therapy ESWT and intralesional injection treatment with substances affecting inflammation and/or enzymes. In the case of ESWT, it is a non-invasive and painless treatment; in the case of injection treatment, it is a method without the risk of erection damage. In the case of severe forms with significant penile deformities, we also perform surgical treatment.

What are the benefits of Peyronie’s disease treatment?

  2. Prevents the occurrence of erectile complications that are common with surgical treatment.
  3. It is a non-invasive and comfortable method without pain.

What are the risks of Peyronie’s disease treatment?

The procedure is generally safe and well tolerated. Mild pain or transient bruising at the injection site may occur, which usually subsides within a few minutes.

How does Peyronie’s disease treatment proceed?

The procedure consists of two phases:

  • outpatient application of ESWT shockwaves to the affected area
  • subsequent injection of substances to suppress inflammation or calcifications directly into the focus.

It is necessary to repeat sessions according to individual condition and severity.

Who is Peyronie’s disease treatment not intended for?

What happens before Peyronie’s disease treatment?

7 days before the procedure, it is necessary to discontinue or adjust the use of medications that affect blood clotting after consultation with a doctor. If you are taking any medications, inform the doctor about them 7 days before the procedure.

The day before the procedure, it is advisable to shave the hair around the genitals.

What happens after Peyronie’s disease treatment?

After ESWT application, penile pain usually does not occur. After intralesional injection application, mild penile pain and mild bruising may usually be felt for 5 minutes. After treatment, the disease stops and pain disappears in all patients. In the case of timely application of combined treatment (usually within 3 months of the onset of symptoms), complete disappearance of hardening, pain, and penile curvature occurs.

Even if the patient comes for treatment later than 3 months after the onset of symptoms, the disease progression stops, pain disappears, and the ability to have sexual intercourse is restored. However, with late treatment initiation, complete but only partial disappearance or reduction of hardening usually does not occur, which is usually sufficient to continue leading an adequate sexual life.
